We’re Hiring!  Staff Inspectors

Nature’s International Certification Services (NICS)/Ecocert USA announces openings for an Organic Staff Inspector. Ideal candidates will reside in the Midwest.  The start date for this position will be January 2026.  The primary responsibility of this position is to conduct inspections and audits of organic operators for compliance to USDA National Organic Program and other related standards. NICS is based in Viroqua, WI. Remote US-based employment is acceptable. Extensive overnight travel is required. 

Principal Duties:

  • Review farm, livestock and/or handling system plans in accordance with applicable regulations and standards.
  • Handle travel and scheduling logistics and conduct inspections of applicants and certified operations as assigned.
  • Assess compliance of operations with applicable regulations/standards and reports.
  • Communicate inspection results through excellent written and oral communication within established timelines.
  • Interface with certification staff to provide further information necessary for certification decisions.
  • Conduct peer evaluations of other inspectors in the field, as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with other NICS/Ecocert staff to share context and information gathered during inspection trips and meeting with producers to help inform and improve NICS policies, procedures, and business practices.
  • Travel extensively 60-80% of the time throughout the United States.

Qualifications:

  • Experience / education in agriculture and/or food manufacturing.
  • Detail-oriented, with excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Highly self-organized with the ability to prioritize work, managing multiple projects while maintaining quality. Ability to work independently and partner with a diverse group of staff and producers.
  • Able to clearly communicate complex technical information in a positive and effective manner.
  • Skilled and comfortable using Microsoft office software, Adobe Acrobat, databases, and other information technology.

Benefits include: Health, dental, vision, life, disability insurance, 401K, PTO, fulltime exempt.

Salary: $50,000 – $62,000 depending on experience.

Contract Organic Inspection Work Available Now in Iowa

The Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association (OEFFA) is seeking experienced inspectors to complete poultry and beef/dairy operation inspections in Iowa, between now and Mid-October. We have approximately 24 inspection assignments available right now.

Additionally, OEFFA is always seeking qualified and passionate individuals interested in joining our team of contract organic inspectors.  OEFFA certifies crop, livestock, and handling operations in a 12-state region, from Wisconsin to Virginia, from Missouri to New York. We seek inspectors to contract with us to complete inspections, doing as few as 15 and as many as 100+ inspections per year and organizing their own schedules. We have an immediate need for crop + livestock inspectors in/near Iowa.

Requirements include: IOIA Inspection training certificate in the scope(s) which one is applying to inspect, or comparable training/experience; and 3+ years of experience in agriculture or similar work or comparable education/training. Necessary skills include: written communication, time management and knowledge of the organic standards.

Depending on the applicant’s prior experience, we may set up an apprenticeship, where mentor and apprentice complete several inspections together. We seek inspectors to contract with us to complete inspections, doing as few as 15 and as many as 100+ inspections per year and organizing their own schedules.

SUMMARY:

The Inspector works with certification staff and clients to assess overall compliance of operations to regulatory standards through on-site observations and evaluation. The Inspector travels (85% of the time) to conduct interviews of operations, audits records, and provides technical assistance to support the needs of clients in the area of inspection. The Inspector works with certification staff to enhance the program through continuous improvement

PAY RANGE: $58,000 – $65,000 per year

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of one-year relevant inspection experience
  • Strong computer skills beyond basic proficiency
  • Mathematical skills equivalent to, or exceeding, post-secondary education level
  • Strong attention to detail

    • All of the above
